SUMMARY:2019 California Bicycle Summit
DESCRIPTION:Scheduled for October 15-17 at the Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles\, the summit welcomes everybody who works for more equitable\, inclusive and prosperous communities where bicycling enables more people to live joyful and healthy lives. Expect dozens of presentations\, workshops\, roundtable discussion\, social events\, bike rides\, and walking tours with an amazing diverse group of people from around the state and around the world. \n\n\n\nThe California Endowment’s Center for Healthy Communities is located on the outskirts of Chinatown in Los Angeles\, just two blocks from Union Station. It is easy to access from LAX or Burbank Airport and of course by train from anywhere in California. \n\n\n\nLodging options are plentiful within a mile radius\, including the Metro Plaza Hotel across the street and the DoubleTree by Hilton. \n\n\n\nThis year’s theme is about the intersections in our work: the physical intersections in our communities that should be safe places to traverse and converse instead of the hazardous injury hotspots they too often are; and the theoretical intersections that define how we each approach bicycling via other issues\, such as land use and housing\, other forms of mobility\, how race and class have impacted and continue to impact transportation justice\, and the urgency of climate change. We will address all these kinds of intersections in plenary sessions\, workshops\, bike rides\, walking tours\, parties\, mixers\, and community activities. This will be a very inclusive event\, with more than 100 free and deeply discounted tickets\, and a steering committee dedicated to recruiting participation from across California’s diverse communities. \n\n\n\nFor up-to-date information on the event\, including links to the fellowship application for discounted tickets\, the call for proposals\, the program\, information on related events and reports on previous events\, visit calbike.org/summit.

SUMMARY:OFFSITE: Biking in LA x Bridging the Gap
DESCRIPTION:Long before Interstate 110 became the first freeway in the Western United States\, Los Angeles was connected via a series of elevated bikeways such as the long-dismantled California Cycleway and the Santa Monica Cycle Path. Today\, Los Angeles is a city with mild climates\, picture perfect oceanfront views\, mostly flat grids\, and near-constant traffic congestion. It offers many compelling reasons for residents and visitors to enjoy the thrill of urban cycling. Yet less than 1% of Angelenos commute to work via bike. Our panel seeks to understand and discuss ways to create accessible and experiential infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians\, whether they are commuting to their office or vacationing along Los Angeles’ scenic Santa Monica Bay. \n\n\n\nConsidering the 2028 Olympics\, which is fast approaching\, the topic of creating Inclusive and Experiential Infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians takes on a new urgency. With the right focus and thoughtfulness\, the efforts to prepare Los Angeles for an influx of over 500\,000 visitors could be harnessed to benefit the city well beyond 2028. The goal of our interactive panel is to bring together avid cyclists who are also experts in the field of design\, advocacy\, community engagement\, wellness\, and urban planning to discuss both short and long term strategies for creating a more accessible and interconnected city. Join us on June 19 at Abramson Teiger Architects’ studio! \n\n\n\n CONFIRMED PANELISTS:\n\n\n\nTrevor Abramson\, FAIA\, Design Principal\, Abramson Teiger ArchitectsGreg Laemmle\, Laemmle Theaters\, The Laemmle Foundation\, and the LA County Bike Coalition MemberKelton Wright\, Author of the City Cycling Guide: Los Angeles and Vertical Director of Movement & Sports for HeadspaceAndrew Ross\, Civil Engineer\, County of Los Angeles Department of Public WorksEli Akira Kaufman\, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition
